Dr. McCarthy on:
Every patient in my office becomes a patient for one ultimate reason:
What is subluxation? Subluxation is a misalignment of the spine.
When there is a problem with the alignment of your spine, the brain cannot communicate properly with your body. When you have subluxation your spine puts pressure on your nerves.
Depending upon where you have misalignment in your spine, you may feel pain... where you have the misalignment determines where you feel the pain. For instance, if you have pressure on the nerves from your neck to your arms you may have pain in your arms.
If you have pressure on the nerves in the middle part of your spine, interference in their function affects your digestive system, heart, lungs, kidneys, and other internal organs.

2. Subluxation Affects Your Body's Ability to Heal Itself
Your nervous system controls your body, and the healing process. If you cut your finger, do you have to put a bandage on for it to heal? Do you have to put lotion on there?
No.
How does your body heal? Do you even have to think about it? Your body heals because your brain instructs it to. As long as your brain can communicate with your body, it can heal.
Part of my responsibility is to take the pressure off your nervous system. The less pressure, the better job the body is going to do of healing itself. The brain and spinal cord control every cell in your body, including your immune system. All of us are taught that germs make you sick.
That's not actually true. Germs do not make you sick, they cannot make you sick. If I was sick and sneezed onto a crowd of people, not all of them would get sick... some may, some won't.
Why would some of them not get sick? If your immune system is functioning properly, you can't get sick. If it's not functioning properly, only then can you actually get sick. In fact it's not the germ that makes you sick, but the immune system's inability to deal with it.
We know all these things that we're supposed to do to keep healthy, we bundle in clothes when it's cold and wash our hands... however if your brain and spine can't function properly, your immune system can't function properly.
There was a study done with about 1,000 children with chiropractic care, and about 1,000 who had never had chiropractic care, to see who would be more healthy. As a whole, the children who were getting adjusted by a chiropractor had less infections, less colds, took less antibiotics and their parents spent less money on health care. The children who were getting adjusted were more healthy.
They did a similar study on seniors, to see who takes more medication, and who is more likely to be living on their own, as opposed to being on assisted living. Seniors getting adjusted by a chiropractor were much more likely to be living on their own, and taking less medications.
I'm relatively young, but there are seniors taking up to 14 different medications, daily. Seniors getting adjusted by a chiropractor were taking maybe 1 or 2 medications, daily.

3. Pain
I don't get adjusted because of pain. I don't have pain. I get adjusted so my body works properly.
We all get adjusted not to get rid of a pain, but so our bodies function better. When our bodies are functioning properly, and we are okay, we don't feel pain. Pain lets you know something is wrong.

4. Muscle Spasms
When your back is not aligned it can pinch down on your nerves. When it interferes with a nerve, your brain can't send the right messages to your muscles. The muscles in that area will clamp down.
A pill will relax them, but when the pill wears off it will tighten again. The only way to make those muscles work properly again is to remove the subluxation with chiropractic care and get your joints moving again.

5. How Do You Get Misalignments?
Do you think slouching all day in school could give you misalignments? Do you ever lay down on your side with your head on your arm? Look what it does to your neck... Have you ever fallen off your bicycle? Did you fall down when you were learning to walk?
All these things can cause subluxations, and there are countless others. Of course I get subluxation, leaning over a table to adjust spines all day... Have you ever been in a car accident?
Most of these things have happened to everyone over and over. We all do things that cause misalignment of the spine.
Everyone should start getting adjusted, start sitting up straight, and take care of their spine. Helping your spine get healthy is the first part of my job.

Today's Health Care Challenges
A Condensed Appeal for Chiropractic Care
It is clear that the major challenge facing our health care system today is to lower the cost of care without sacrificing its quality.
One area that is particularly promising in this regard is the treatment of neuromusculoskeltal disorders by doctors of chiropractic (DCs). The following body of evidence has been compiled to show that chiropractic care has a high rate of patient satisfaction and safety, while actually being more effective and less costly than some treatments using traditional medicine.
Chiropractic: A Profession at the Crossroads of Mainstream and Alternative Medicine
(Annals of Internal Medicine – 2002 Volume 136 – Number 3)
• Chiropractic is the largest, most regulated, and best recognized of the professions that have traditionally functioned outside of mainstream medical institutions.
• Chiropractors are used more often than any other alternative provider group (2), and the satisfaction with chiropractic care is very high.

"Stressful conditions lead to altered measures of immune function, and altered susceptibility to a variety of diseases. Many stimuli, which primarily act on the central nervous system, can profoundly alter immune responses. The two routes available to the central nervous system for communication with peripheral organs are neuroendocrine channels and autonomic nerve channels."

An article in the New York Times stated, "Scientists have found the first evidence of an anatomical connection between the nervous system and the immune system. Nerve cell endings in the skin and white blood cells of the immune system are in intimate contact, and chemicals secreted by the nerves can shut down immune system cells nearby." The New York Times author was describing the findings of a paper written by Hosoi et al.
